Prophet Row: Section 144 Imposed In Assam's Kamrup District

Guwahati: Prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed by the authorities in the Kamrup district so as to ensure that "public peace and tranquility" is maintained. 

This move comes in the wake of the recent violence that has flared up across the country following the derogatory remarks made against the Prophet Mohammad by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

Kamrup district happens to be the fourth district in the state to have taken preventive measures and it was preceded by all the three districts of Barak Valley.

Kamrup district magistrate (in-charge) Siddhartha Goswami, on Sunday, put restrictions on public gatherings under Section 144 of the CrPC and it will be applied to any public place, where there is an attempt to hold processions.

This decision is also taken so that sloganeering could be prevented at any cost and it is done so that the people are not provoked and communal tensions are not sparked.

As per the order, arms, ammunition, explosives, and weapons of any kind are strictly forbidden in public places and vehicles and it has also restricted the usage of loudspeakers with immediate effect.

"Some unspecified persons or groups of persons or organizations/associations may cause a breach of public peace and tranquility and disturb normal public life and general administration at any unspecified place within the district of Kamrup," Siddhartha Goswami stated in his order.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Saturday, informed that the government is keeping a close eye on the law and order situation in the state.
